ASCA is a national Australian non-government organisation dedicated to the health and wellbeing of adult survivors of all forms of child abuse and neglect. By conservative estimates there are more than 2 million adults surviving child abuse in Australia. More than 8 million Australian community members are directly affected by this tragedy. Despite this the impact of child abuse and the needs of adult survivors receive little community or government support.
Since 1995, ASCA has provided support for adults who have suffered abuse in the past and are struggling with its effects in the present, as well as for those who support them. Through its Australia-wide network of survivors, supporters and professionals ASCA has been helping to break down the sense of isolation and alienation that many survivors feel.
In recent years ASCA has embraced a new era of possibilities and positive outcomes. In 2009 ASCA ran a National Advertising Campaign, developed a human rights’ stance and launched its inaugural Forget-me-knot Day, a national day for all Australians to unite in support of adults surviving child abuse. These initiatives have helped raise awareness in the community about the long-term legacy of child abuse and are creating a climate in which survivors are better able to come forward and receive the help they need.
