He also works at the Vancouver General Hospital Outpatient Psychiatry Program where his clinical interests include the assessment and treatment of adult mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. In addition to psychodynamic psychotherapy and teaching the next generation of mental health professionals, Dr. Frankland’s academic interests include: the study of non-verbal communication, the mental health assessment interview, the interface between contemporary psychodynamic theory and cognitive neuroscience, and the integration of various theoretical frameworks in the management of psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Frankland completed his undergraduate science degree in biopsychology (a field that combines psychology and neuroscience) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He also completed his medical degree at UBC before pursuing specialist training in psychiatry (with a focus on object relations therapy) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. After his psychiatry residency, Dr. Frankland did an additional year of mentorship training in object relations before returning to Vancouver, where he now works and teaches medical students, psychiatry residents, and allied mental health students.

Dr. Frankland recently began writing for Oxford University Press (USA). His first book, entitled The Little Psychotherapy Book: Object Relations in Practice, was released in April 2010.
