American Association of Suicidology

The American Association of Suicidology (AAS) was founded by clinical psychologist Edwin S. Shneidman, Ph.D. in 1968. After co-directing the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center (L.A.S.P.C.) since 1958, Dr. Shneidman was appointed co-director of The Center for Suicide Prevention at the National Institute of Mental Health (N.I.M.H.) in Bethesda, MD. There he had the opportunity to closely observe the limited available knowledge-base regarding suicide.
Mission:
The goal of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) is to understand and prevent suicide. They accomplish this mission by directing efforts to :

  • Advance Suicidology as a science; encouraging, developing and disseminating scholarly work in suicidology.
  • Encourage the development and application of strategies that reduce the incidence and prevalence of suicidal behaviors.
  • Compile, develop, evaluate and disseminate accurate information about suicidal behaviors to the public.
  • Foster the highest possible quality of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention to the public.
  • Publicize official AAS positions on issues of public policy relating to suicide.
  • Promote research and training in suicidology.

Activities:
AAS hosts three conferences on an annual basis:

  • AAS Annual Conference for researchers, clinicians, survivors, school personnel, volunteers and other mental health professionals.
  • Healing After Suicide Conference for those who have lost someone to suicide.
  • Collaborative Crisis Center Conference for crisis center staff and volunteers seeking networking, educational and skill-building workshops.
