American Psychotherapy and Medical Hypnosis Association (APMHA) was formed in 1992 by a group of licensed therapists as an alternative for professionals to provide a multidisciplinary forum for the ethical use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. While there were several national hypnosis associations in existence, there was a gap remaining for a particular professional population, most frequently Master's level practitioners, but also Ph.D.s who didn’t receive their training from the specific organizations who sought their memberships.

In 1992 The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the most prominent organization at the time, did not allow membership of Master's degreed professionals. ASCH provided membership for some M.D./PhD. degreed participants, but dictated that only their training would be allowed. Although many of the ASCH members who initiated this ruling were trained by lay hypnotists, this exclusionary practice failed to provide an organization for professionals trained in other methods recognized by their respective State Board authorities.

Mission: Dedicated to promoting ethical uses of clinical hypnosis in medical, mental health, dental, judicial, and forensic settings. Committed to quality care, with the utmost respect and regard for clients and patients, and providing appropriate referrals to treatment within the professional community.
