Birkbeck, University of London - Department of Psychological Sciences

The Department of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck was established in the difficult period of the Second World War but its origin can be traced to King’s College London in the early days of psychological science towards the end of the Nineteenth Century.

Psychology at Birkbeck can trace its roots to the beginnings of the scientific study of the subject in this country a century ago. The Department of Psychology at King’s College was founded in 1906 and moved to Birkbeck College during the Second World War, when Birkbeck was the only University of London College to keep teaching students in London.

The Department provides an active and vibrant research environment which directly informs its teaching. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) Birkbeck Psychology was ranked 5th in the country for the excellence of its research. Research groups in the Department won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2006. In the last Quality Assurance round, the Department’s teaching was rated 23 (out of 24). Birkbeck students recently won both University of London undergraduate project prizes for psychology (the Burt and Carpenter prizes) in competition with all University of London Colleges.

Developments in empirical investigations in psychology were relatively slow in Britain for a number of reasons but mainly the conservative attitudes of university authorities and society generally. However, William Rivers established the first experimental laboratory at Cambridge in 1897, and James Sully played an important role in establishing a laboratory at University College London in the following year.
