ICAN National Center on Child Fatality Review

NCFR’s Mission is accomplished through the establishment, support and expansion of a national network of multi-agency, multi-disciplinary, local, regional and state Child Fatality Review Teams.

Child death review began in Los Angeles County with the work of Michael Durfee M.D. In 1978, the LA County Interagency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN) formed the first Child Death Review Team. Today, there are over 900 child death review teams and numerous specialized death review teams, such as Youth and Adolescent Suicide Review, Domestic Violence Death Review and Sudden Infant Death (SIDS) Review throughout the United States.

As a clearinghouse for the collection and dissemination of information and resources related to child deaths, NCFR is dedicated to providing training and technical assistance to child death review teams throughout the world. As a centralized agent, NCFR enables local, state, regional, and national entities to communicate and learn from one another about programs and activities aimed at decreasing preventable child injuries and fatalities.

ICAN Associates, Inc. is proud to sponsor this web site, dedicated exclusively to the mission of the National Center on Child Fatality Review.
