Manhattan Institute For Psychoanalysis Established in 1980 and chartered by the Board of Regents of the State University of New York, the Institute is administered by the Co-Directors and a series of committees comprising faculty, graduates and candidates. Their mission is to provide postgraduate education in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy from a contemporary interpersonal perspective to psychotherapists seeking advanced clinical training. The Institute also offers a comprehensive treatment referral service for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, and was one of the first psychoanalytic institutes to offer a separate clinical service specializing in the treatment of trauma.

Their curriculum encompasses the evolution of psychoanalytic thinking from its origins in classical theory through its development and elaboration in interpersonal theory and praxis, including a full range of contemporary relational orientations. Each admitted class goes through its program as a cohort, enabling a depth and intimacy of training experience that is intensive as well as clinically and personally transformative. The Institute prides itself on providing a warm, supportive environment for learning and for professional development.

Training at Manhattan offers the opportunity to:

  • expand the skill and creativity of your clinical work in supervision with senior colleagues
  • read and discuss with a group of colleagues the full range of psychoanalytic literature
  • deepen self-awareness and understanding in your own psychoanalysis
  • receive referrals for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy from the Institute's Clinical Services
