The Center is devoted to research, clinical care, neuropathological studies, and educational activities in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related disorders. As part of its mission, the MADRC seeks to ensure that all individuals and families in Michigan have access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques and the most current information about research findings.
The Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center is one of 29 Alzheimer's research centers in the U.S. funded by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health. Established at the University of Michigan Health System in 1989, the MADRC is devoted to research, clinical care, and providing current information on Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
When patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or related memory problems agree to participate in research studies, it is important that they continue to receive comprehensive clinical care from their primary care physician. Though patients participating in research studies will receive periodic evaluations, depending on the specific research protocol, this does not substitute for regular clinical care. There are several specialty clinics within the U-M Department of Neurology that offer a range of clinical services for patients and families concerned about memory problems or movement disorders. The Cognitive Disorder Clinic offers a thorough assessment for patients with memory problems and provides ongoing care. The Movement Disorders Clinic provides evaluation and clinical care for patients who are experiencing movement disorders.
Advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders are only possible when people participate in research.
The MADRC is currently enrolling participants for several different types of studies.
The research goals of the MADRC include:
- Understanding age related changes in memory;
- Understanding what occurs within the brain before disease symptoms appear;
- Developing better diagnostic methods to differentiate between different types of dementias; and
- Helping to determine if a new drug or treatment strategy is safe and effective for use in human subjects.
