The Multicultural Family Institute is a non-profit educational institution committed to family therapy training, research and consultation to community institutions from a Multicultural Systemic perspective. The Institute aims to provide training to therapists and counselors who work with individuals, couples, and families at any point in the life cycle. The Institute is committed to promoting social justice, countering the societal forces that undermine people because of race, gender, culture, class, sexual orientation or disability.
Originally developed at the Community Mental Health Center of the UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1974, the Multicultural Family Institute was incorporated as a non-profit educational institution in 1991. The Institute offers conferences, seminars and training progrms as well as consultation to schools and agencies and clinical services to individuals and families. The Institute faculty and affiliates are known internationally for their training and contributions to family therapy theory and practice. In particular, they are known for their efforts to expand the boundaries of systems thinking to address issues of social justice and equity. Faculty members have made many contributions to the understanding of families including issues of culture and race, multicultural families, issues for men and women in families, class, and life cycle issues, including untimely and traumatic loss, couple relationships, divorce, child custody, remarriage, child, sibling and adolescent problems, caretaking of aging and ill family members and issues of family conflict and cutoff.
