Originally incorporated in 1981 as the American Schizophrenia Foundation, NARSAD, The World's Leading Charity Dedicated to Mental Health Research, was formed by three leading national mental health organizations: National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, National Mental Health Association and National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association. The commitment to research by the more than 1,000,000 members of these organizations helped elevate NARSAD to the most important private funder of psychiatric disorders.
Recently, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) has adopted the business name “NARSAD, The World's Leading Charity Dedicated to Mental Health Research” to reflect the broader funding interests of the organization. In addition to funding research about schizophrenia and depression, NARSAD funds research such as childhood psychiatric disorders, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders.
NARSAD raises money from donors around the world and invests it directly in the most promising research projects in mental health.
NARSAD help the best and brightest scientific minds unravel the complexities of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders such as PTSD and OCD and childhood disorders that include autism and ADHD. They continue to support them as they develop the next generation of diagnostics and treatments.
Every dollar donated to NARSAD goes directly to research - 100% of all donations - as two private family foundations cover all operating expenses. They enough effort, NARSAD expects scientists someday to discover preventions and cures for these devastating illnesses.
