National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis

NAAP was created in January 1972 when psychoanalytic institute faculties from the East, Southwest, and Western United States met to discuss unification of the profession.

NAAP requires its members to have a minimum of 375 hours of seminars on theory and technique, 300 hours of personal psychoanalysis, 150 hours of psychoanalytic case supervision, 300 hours of supervised clinical practice experience.

naap was organized to:

  • Establish educational standards for psychoanalytic training institutes seeking accreditation
  • Examine psychoanalytic training institutes to determine whether they have met the standards
  • Establish the qualifications of individuals for membership in NAAP, grant membership to individuals who have met the standards, and publish a National Registry of members in good standing
  • Elevate the standards of graduate education in psychoanalysis
  • Work toward the recognition of psychoanalysis as a separate profession
  • Serve a diverse population in the most professional way possible.
