The New England Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies provides clinical training programs in psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, child and family studies, group studies, addiction studies and applied psychoanalysis. The institute is located in Portland, Maine. Programs of Study may be completed at Portland Campus or through their highly efficient distance learning program. The institute has provided distance learning opportunities since 1987 and have provided students with the same curriculum as those who attend the Portland Campus.
Mission Statement
The New England Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies will be an institution of international reputation providing psychoanalytic education and training for students to develop critical and analytical thinking and to make well-founded ethical decisions. It will respond to the call for clinical research and practice. The Institute will prepare students to address complex issues facing them in society and to discover meaning in their own lives. It will provide education and training in the foundational understanding of Freudian theory and practice of psychoanalysis through classroom instruction, case conferences, and seminars; Provide self-understanding through a training analysis; offer clinical opportunities for proficiency in the technique of psychoanalysis through supervised practice; Provide experience under supervision in a clinical facility; and provide course work in sound moral and ethical standards of professional behavior. It will encourage diversity in its student body and will meet the needs of students by providing them with interdisciplinary and innovative professional courses. The Institute will energetically seek ways to interact with and serve the needs of the student body. The Institute will provide and support a faculty that is diverse, innovative, excellent in clinical teaching, psychoanalysis, active in research, and responsive to the needs of students and the community. The Institute will be a resource of the State of Maine serving private and public sectors.
