As Northwestern is one of the major research universities in the United States, research is a central focus for the Department of Psychology. Although a general theme of the department is theoretical research in higher thought processes, most of the principal academic research disciplines in psychology are represented here.
Northwestern University's Psychology Department is one of the strongest and most prestigious departments in the United States. They offer Ph.D. programs in five areas: Clinical Psychology, Personality Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, and the area of Brain, Behavior, & Cognition (BBC). All engage in a series of research projects, and all assist with undergraduate teaching. The department offers no terminal master's degree; students must earn a master's degree as one requirement for the PhD. Faculty and graduate students in all five areas are conducting some of the most exciting and influential research being done in the psychological sciences today. Federally, privately, and internally funded research programs seek to provide a basic understanding of human thinking and behavior, as well as pathways to more effective treatment of diseases of the mind and tools for the betterment of society as a whole.
