The University Department of Psychiatry is based at the Warneford Hospital. It supports research in four key areas: neurobiology, psychological treatments, developmental psychiatry and social psychiatry.
Their work is an important component of the University’s strategy for neuroscience and the themes of the neurobiology and psychological treatments programmes have always been translational. Thus, their core interest is in the mechanism of action of psychotropic drugs or psychotherapy, understood from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience. By harnessing cognitive neuroscience models often based on brain imaging they can provide surrogates for understanding mechanisms of psychiatric disease, individual differences, and how effective treatments really work.
Research interests include brain and behaviour relationships, especially involving perception and memory and motor function; human experimental psychology, especially involving attention, memory, human skills and industrial health; social psychology, especially non-verbal communication, long-term relationships and social skills; and developmental psychology, especially infant perception and social interaction, emotional development, and development of reading and other cognitive skills.
