The Department of Psychology at the University of Glasgow is rated very highly for research and teaching. In the RAE 2008, the department retained its position as one of the top ten research departments in the country.
The department scored very highly in the proportion of its research rated 4* (the highest grade). On this figure Glasgow Psychology was ranked 7th in the UK. What is more, this excellent rating was achieved at the same time as increasing the number of staff submitted by nearly 50% over the previous exercise.
In the most recent National Student Survey (2009) the department was ranked joint 3rd of all UK Psychology Departments and the highest in Scotland with 96% of their students satisfied with the quality of the course.
Research at the Department of Psychology attempts to advance our understanding of behaviour and the underlying mental processes and brain functions at multiple levels of analysis. This effort entails the integration of diverse approaches and paradigms from experimental psychology, cognitive science and the cognitive neurosciences. The Department is committed to producing basic and applied research of the highest quality with a focus on three main areas:
- Cognitive and behavioural neuroscience
- Language and communication
- Perception and cognition
The Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (CCNi) within the Department of Psychology has been created as a strategic priority of the University of Glasgow. CCNi provides state-of-the-art functional neuroimaging facilities for researchers in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, neuropsychology and cognitive science.
