School of Psychology, University of Western Australia

Since being established in 1930, as the second Psychology Department in Australia and the first to offer a full undergraduate course, the School has maintained its reputation for innovative research and teaching. The School has approximately 30 full-time academic teaching staff, 1200 undergraduates, and more than 80 students enrolled in higher degree programs. Staff and research students are actively involved in a broad range of fundamental and applied research programs. The research is supported by University funding and by grants from government and private funding agencies. Many projects require a team approach to research problems and several involve interdisciplinary collaboration. Much of the research is accomplished in special-purpose laboratories and other projects take place in community settings such as schools and industrial organisations.

The School has developed a reputation for being successful at winning financial support from outside the university for basic and applied research. The School is well equipped with teaching, laboratory, workshop, and office space. Programming, computer hardware, electronics, multimedia and mechanical skills are provided by specialised support staff. In addition, it has three centres located on the campus - the Child Study Centre, (which incorporates two kindergartens and a special education unit), the Clinical Unit, (which incorporates the Robin Winkler Clinic) and the Centre for Organisational Research. There are Test Libraries located in both the Child Study Centre and Clinical Unit. These centres provide excellent teaching and research facilities, and have made a major contribution towards establishing the School's reputation for applied and community research.
