Victim Services

They are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to helping victims of crime and/or sudden tragic circumstance. They provide responsive, accessible and accountable programs and services. Their focus is on restoring and enhancing victims’ quality of life and preventing re-victimization.

By the late 1980’s, there had been enough research on post traumatic stress and critical incident stress to prove that tragic events can severely disable an individual for days, months or even years. Counselling and supporting victims immediately after a traumatic event is key to helping them cope, manage and rebuild their lives.

In 1985, the Toronto Police Service engaged and enlisted a number of local community agencies with crisis management expertise to assist and advise them in developing appropriate services for victims. These agencies formed an advisory committee which recommended and helped develop a specialized service of crisis response for victims.

In 1990 the Victim Services Program of Toronto was established as an independent community agency to provide immediate crisis response to victims of crime and sudden tragic circumstance.
