The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), published by the American Psychiatric Association, Washington D.C., 1994, groups Mental Disorders along a diagnostic system of 5 Axes and corresponding code numbers. So next time you get this psychological report you will be able to decode the secret language of psychologists and psychiatrists. Here is a short overview of this classification. This list is not yet complete. This is the most prominent group of Mental Disorders. It consists of the majority of disorders described in the 4th edition of the DSM. People diagnosed with an Axis I Disorder suffer from a serious mental illness.
