CFIDS vs. Chronic Fatigue

Although commonly confused, CFIDS and Chronic Fatigue are actually two separate terms.

In 1994, the Centers for Disease Control developed a research and clinical definition for chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). However, there is still a great deal of confusion around how the disease is defined and diagnosed.

Terminology is a major area of confusion. In discussing the disease, many people erroneously use the terms CFIDS and "chronic fatigue" interchangeably.

There are clear distinctions between chronic fatigue and CFIDS: CFIDS is an illness, and chronic fatigue is a symptom common to many, mostly unrelated illnesses. In addition, outside of the U.S., particularly in Europe and Canada, CFIDS is known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, perhaps a more accurate term.
